The Weekly Clothesline: Live like you were dying…

Posted

What would you do if you knew you only had a short time to live? I thought about Tim McGraw’s song “Live Like You Were Dying.” As we draw closer to the end of Lent and Good Friday, I often wonder what Jesus was thinking as his days on earth were coming to a close.

The story of the Rich Young Man comes to mind. He asks Jesus, “What must I do to gain eternal life?” He told Jesus that he had kept all the commandments, that he had lived a good life, and apparently, he also had everything! Yet, somehow, he knew something was missing. Jesus tells the man that he needs to give up his worldly possessions and follow Him. The young man wasn’t willing to focus on heavenly things, and in the end, he turned and walked away from Jesus. He didn’t get the answer he wanted. However long he lived, he chose to continue his life solely connected to his worldly possessions, and we hear nothing more about this young man.

I have often thought about the importance of living each day to the fullest because we never know… I am thankful for God’s gracious gifts and grateful for the ability to share His Word with others. And I pray that my life choices will be acceptable to my God when my last day arrives. So, choose well how you live your life, because you never know when your last day will come.
