Letter to the Editor: Response to 'Bulk mail voting is an open invitation to fraud'

Posted

In his diatribe against mail-in voting, Mr. Thomas Patterson wrote, “Why are Democrats motivated to concoct these exaggerated arguments against in-person voting, which has always worked just fine for Americans? It began in the age of Covid when, to prevent unnecessary mingling, voting in-person was discouraged. Voters instead were sent a ballot which they could return at their leisure.”

In the case of Arizona, mail-in voting did NOT start with COVID-19. It has existed in Arizona for more than three decades, it’s incredibly popular (in the 2022 elections, 88% of Arizonans voted by mail), and the number of fraudulent votes found can be counted with one hand. Efforts by Republicans to curtail Arizonans’ access to voting is the real threat to democracy. Thus, either Mr. Patterson is incredibly ignorant about Arizona or purposefully deceitful.
