Community event planned at Douglas Brown Center

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – A special event is planned on April 27 at the Douglas Brown Community Center.

At their March 28 meeting, Okeechobee County Commissioners approved a request from Charles Smith for use of the facilities from 8 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Smith said the daytime event activities will start at 3 p.m, and include food vendors, games for the kids and music.

An indoor event for adults only will start at 9 p.m. Smith said no one under the age of 21 will be admitted to the indoor event. Commissioners approved the request to serve alcohol at the adults only event.

Smith said they will have off-duty officers from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office as well as some private security.

“It’s a good service you are providing for the community,” said Commission Chair David Hazellief.

“I think one or two people complained about the music in the past,” said Commissioner Brad Goodbread. He said he has no objection to the event as long as any noise complaints are handled, and the sheriff’s office is involved.

Smith said they will not use the outdoor sound system after 9 p.m.

Community Services Director Denise Whitehead said approval from the county commission is required for any alcohol consumption at county facilities. She said event organizers must also provide liability insurance.

Smith, Douglas Brown
