CLEWISTON- The Clewiston High School wrestling program had one of their members advance to the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state tournament on Feb. 29.
Gumaro Martinez III earned a ticket to the state tournament after placing fourth in his weight class at regionals on Feb. 24.
This is Gumaro’s third year with the Tiger wrestling program and he plans on attending Palm Beach State College after high school to get a degree in finance He is one of only two seniors on the team, with fellow senior Ronald Loreto wrestling in the 126lb weight class.
The appearance in the state tournament caps off a successful year for Gumaro and the Tigers wrestling team as a whole. During the SWFL Conference Tournament on Feb. 3 and 4, Gumaro won first place in his weight class and secured his 100th career win.
Gumaro went undefeated at the Eric Paul Duals back in January, winning five straight matches. He earned runners-up at the Ray Worsham Invitational this season and fourth place at the Santaluces Christmas Tournament.
Gumaro earned Big Lake Athlete of the Week honors this season before regionals. He’s the second Tiger wrestler to earn the award this season. On Jan. 24 William Bussot was recognized for coming in first place at the Ray Worsham Invitational and first place at the LaBelle Cowboy Classic.
