Man repairing Veterans Memorial display gets visit from the cops

Posted

OKEECHOBEE - Local veteran activist, Gregg Maynard, was interupted in his work on the big guns in Flagler Park Sunday, when  someone called 911 to report a scrapper cutting up the guns.

Maynard, who is well known for his work with veterans - taking them to the VA, helping them with claims, remodeling their bathrooms to make them accessible and anything else asked of him - has been working on cleaning up the big guns that are part of the Veterans Memorial in the park.

While he was working Sunday morning, Okeechobee City Police  Sgt. Belen Reyna and Officer Brandi  Drapal walked up, laughing. When he asked what was so funny, they said someone reported a scrapper stealing metal off the guns.

Maynard took it all in stride and said he is actually glad people are looking out for the things in the park. "It's nice someone was paying attention," he said. He thought it was funny that no one batted an eye when he had the tank removed from the park for repairs last year, but the police were called as he worked this time.

The repairs will take a while, because the guns are in bad shape, but he will take it one day at a time until the job is done.
