Lady Tigers win big over Glades Day

Posted

CLEWISTON- The Clewiston High School Lady Tiger varsity softball team defeated the Glades Day Gators 11-1 on Feb. 25.

The win brings Clewiston's record to 6-2 so far this season, almost matching their start from last year before COVID-19 ended things for the Lady Tigers.

In 2020 Clewiston had gotten off to a 7-3 start, one of their best in recent years. Led on the pitching mound by then freshman Ryland Polhill, who had 79 strike outs in 39 innings played and a ERA 1.79.

Right when it looked like the Lady Tigers were primed for a run into the playoffs, word came that school would be shut down for a week.

“When we first learned about it I told the girls it was only going to be a week then we would be right back after it,” said Clewiston coach Chris Barraza. “That turned into two weeks. The next thing you know our whole season was over.”

The Clewiston offense got off to a fast start against Glades Day, putting five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. The Lady Tigers were a force to be reckoned with at the plate, with Lady Gator outfielders regularly having to make plays at the perimeter fence.

Polhill had two RBIs while sophomore Jayla Vallejo hit a triple. Sophomore Samantha Morales led the Lady Tigers with four stolen bases.

Polhill pitched four innings, allowing only one hit and striking out 11.

The Lady Tigers will be back at home on March 4 when they host Lake Placid at Sugarland Park.
