Lady Tigers head to regional quarterfinal

Posted

CLEWISTON- The Clewiston High School Lady Tiger varsity softball team is headed to the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Tigers went into the 3A district 13  tournament last week and came out as district runners-up, beating King’s Academy and falling to Oxbridge Academy in the championship game.

Clewiston opened up the district semifinal against the King’s Academy Lady Lions with a flurry of runs in the early innings, jumping out to a 14-4 lead by the third.

King’s Academy mounted a small rally in the fourth and fifth innings, eventually rebounding to make the score 14-10. But the Lady Tiger batters stuck a dagger in the Lady Lion’s hopes in the sixth and seventh innings, going on to secure the win 25-11.

Hilary Martin led the Lady Tigers with five hits on the night, followed by Jade Potter with four. Potter had a team leading four RBIs against King’s Academy, with Ryland Polhill  not far behind with three.

Martin, Potter, and Polhill are part of a sophomore class on the Clewiston squad that should help the team become a contender in the district playoffs for the next few years.

In the championship game the Lady Tigers faced the powerhouse Oxbridge Academy Lady Thunderwolves. Oxbridge has put together a remarkable run for their 2021 season, going 18-1-1. They beat Clewiston twice in that run, shutting them out once and holding the Lady Tigers to only two runs in their second matchup.

That Lady Thunderwolves defense was dominant again in the championship game, shutting out Clewiston to win the district championship 12-0.

Up next the Lady Tigers will travel to compete in the regional quarterfinal. Awaiting them is another powerhouse team, Coral Springs Charter. Clewiston and Coral Springs take the field at  4 p.m. on May 5 at Betti Stradling Park in Coral Springs.
