LABELLE- A proclamation proclaiming the week of May 16-22, 2021 as “Water Reuse Week” was read by Hendry Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) Chairman Mitchell Wills. During the BOCC meeting, they commissioners also adopted a proclamation deeming April 2021 as “Water Conservation Month.”
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that each American uses an average of 100 gallons of water a day at home. This does not even include water used to manufacture products we use or the food we eat.
Water Reuse Week and Water Conservation Month are annual declarations aimed at promoting and encouraging efficient use of reclaimed water, and highlighting and encouraging water conservation efforts throughout the community.
“With demand for water forecasted to grow over the next 20 years, the use of reclaimed water, primarily used for irrigation in South Florida, reduces the demand on our underground aquifers and preserves our precious water resources. It can also help fight saltwater intrusion into these aquifers that supply drinking water to millions of South Florida residents and visitors,” according to the South Florida Water Management District. “Demand for water is projected to increase by 533 million gallons per year (15 percent increase) Districtwide over the next 20 years. These projected demands could be reduced by using water more efficiently through conservation measures.”
Libby Pigman, from South Florida Water Management District, thanked the BOCC for adopting the two proclamations. She also mentioned how important water is, especially being an agricultural community living at the edge of Lake Okeechobee.
