Glades County students celebrate Literacy Week

Posted

MOORE HAVEN -- Glades County students returned to the classroom Feb. 1. At Moore Haven Elementary School Mrs. Lowman’s Kindergarten class practiced segmenting and blending words. The school will celebrate Literacy Week next week.

Monday: “Hat’s off to Literacy Week.” Wear your favorite hat, headband or crown. The School Resource Officer will read to selected classes.

Tuesday: “Travel T-Shirt Tuesday.” Wear t-shirts of places you have been or places you would like to go. Classroom teachers will read a book about an exciting adventure. Decorate a bookmark of an adventurous place students would like to travel to.

Wednesday: “Reading Ties Us Together.” Wear a tie or scarf. District office staff will read stories to select classes.

Thursday: “Team Up for Reading Outside.” Wear clothing from your favorite sports team and read outside with your classmates.

Friday: “Pawsitively Wild About Reading.” Wear animal print or Terrier clothes and the classroom teacher will read an animal-themed book to the class.

Daily book contests will be held. A staff member will read and excerpt of a biography about an important figure to celebrate Black History Month. Each class will submit a guess as to the identity of the person. All correct guesses will be placed into a drawing for prizes for all class members. Contest winners will be announced during the afternoon announcements and posted in the front office.

The school will also honor the classes with the most Literacy Spirit. Class prizes will be given for the class with the highest percentage of participation for each dress up day. Daily winners will be announced in the afternoon announcements. Classroom tallies will be displayed in the front office.
