Community comes together to celebrate moms

Posted

CLEWISTON- A wonderful Mother’s Day celebration was held in The Harlem community’s Tree Park. The event included a live band, Walmart gift card giveaways to the first 100 mothers, and a grand prizes raffle of gift baskets and cash, on the evening off May 9, 2021.

The socially distanced event was organized through collaborative efforts between US Sugar Corporation, the Harlem Tenants Association, and the Harlem Civic Improvement Council. The organizations have monthly events planned, like this one, in order to foster unity and togetherness. Last month there was an egg hunt through the park, for Easter.

One of the biggest blessings during this month's celebration, event organizer LaVita Holmes said, was seeing the community come together, after COVID-19 has created so many challenges and so much loss. The joyous event, helped to buoy everyone’s spirits after such a hard year.

With energizing music from the Derek Mack Band, happy mothers of all ages were seen cheering each other on as they danced.

During the event, Holmes also wanted to show support for a mother who couldn’t be there, as she has been in the hospital with her son since December.

Kolisa Franklin’s son, Travis, is battling a rare condition, and his mom has been in Miami, by his side every step of the way. She hasn’t been able to work in three months, but has keep an eternally optimistic outlook during their struggles.

After sharing the Franklin family’s story, the mothers at the event began to collect donations. At the end of the event, $610 was collected for the Franklins. Holmes and the rest of the community hope to provide continued support for the family.
