OKEECHOBEE — The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will conduct aquatic plant control on Lake Okeechobee (North Western Marsh) beginning the week of Feb. 22. There is an estimated 1.5 to 2 acres of the invasive fern, Azolla pinnata around the Indian Prairie Canal’s mouth. This species is under the EDRR (Early detection rapid response) plant list. The goal of this treatment is to prevent this species from becoming established in the lake. The last time this species was treated in Lake Okeechobee was back in 2018 in the south end of the lake, where close to 400 acres had to be managed. Without immediate management of this species, it can quickly increase into the hundreds of acreages.
