Students First - Three IHS athletes recognized by district

Posted

IMMOKALEE - Collier County Public Schools (CCPS) has begun a new venture to recognize high school student-athletes. Each month, one standout athlete from each high school is designated a “District All-Star.”

At each school, coaches submit nominations to their Activities Coordinator, along with a brief explanation as to why they have chosen a particular student. A standout player could be a student-athlete who has achieved greatness, overcome adversity to meet personal goals, or simply reflected his/her team or school in a positive light. The school’s top selection is sent to the District office. District All-Stars are announced by the first of every month, and individual student-athlete stories are shared on the District’s Twitter page throughout the month.

To date, three District-All Stars from Immokalee High School (IHS) have been recognized by CCPS. Congratulations to the following students: Kevin Charles (February 2021); Cordeyja Taylor (March 2021); and Bryan Lara (April 2021).

Kevin Charles was the captain of the IHS Indians Varsity Basketball team. Kevin has shown tremendous leadership on the court and in the classroom. He has earned straight A’s and has motivated teammates to pursue academic excellence as well. At the time of his submission, Kevin averaged 16 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

Cordeyja Taylor is a freshman standout at IHS in both basketball and volleyball. She was impressive in her first season with the Lady Indians basketball team, posting a personal season-high when she scored 14 points in a single game. Cordeyja is a leader on and off the court, and great things are expected from her in the years to come.

Bryan Lara is a team captain on the IHS Lacrosse team. So far this season, the junior attacker leads the Indians in scoring with 18 goals and 5 assists. Bryan is on the verge of becoming one of the top five goal-scorers in school history. He’s also an excellent student in the classroom and consistently demonstrates leadership for his fellow teammates and peers.

We look forward to sharing next month’s selection at the start of May. To view the complete list of District All-Stars, please visit www.collierschools.com/districtallstars.
