Man arrested in connection with Brown Sugar Festival shooting

HENDRY COUNTY- Saturday night, May 1, 2021, a shooter left one person dead and three others injured during an after-party of the Brown Sugar Festival, an annual event held in the Harlem Community of Clewiston.

Deputies responded and located the victim, later identified as 20 yr. old Evereonna Sankey, of Lee County; they then began providing CPR, however the victim died as a result of her injuries.

The medical condition of the others injured has not yet been released.

On May 4, 2021, investigators were able to obtain an arrest warrant for 29-year-old Larance De’Angelo Humphrey of Tallahassee. However, deputies were unable to locate him that same day. Humphrey turned himself into the Hendry County Sheriff ‘s Office (HCSO) on May 5, 2021.

“Continuing to follow up on leads involving the shooting death of 20-year-old Evereonna Sankey, Investigators received information that Humphrey was attempting to tamper with evidence that may have led to the shooter in this case,” the HCSO announced. “Humphrey was taken into custody and booked in the Hendry County Jail on charges of  Accessory After the Fact to First Degree Homicide (a first degree felony) and Tampering with Physical Evidence, (a third degree felony).  He is being held with No Bond.”

“Our investigators are receiving leads on a daily basis that are proving helpful in this investigation," said Sheriff Whidden.  “We are encouraging anyone who may have been present during the time of the shooting to please share your videos and/or pictures thru the link provided on our Facebook page," Whidden stated.

Whidden continued, “We are asking that anyone with any information to please either contact the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office at (863) 674-5600 or call  Crime Stoppers, at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477), where you will remain anonymous and may be eligible for a $3,000 cash reward.  Additionally, this case has been approved by The Florida Sheriff’s Association Criminal Apprehension Assistance Program and has pledged the extra $5000 enhanced reward for a total of $8,000.

"Our detectives are working around the clock to seek justice for all victims of this heinous crime and continue to ask for your help”, said Whidden.

The Brown Sugar Festival is an annual event held on the first Saturday in May. The festival not only works to spread local awareness and appreciation of Black Heritage but also provides scholarships to students in the community.
